Introduction
Everything around us shapes our health and how long we live. From our jobs and homes to public transport and access to healthy food, our surroundings play a big role. Factors like poverty, loneliness, or discrimination can make it harder to stay healthy. These influences are known as the Building Blocks of Health.
Why do the Building Blocks of Health matter?
Not everyone in the UK has the same opportunity to live a long and healthy life. The quality of housing, education, job opportunities, and safe spaces to exercise all impact our wellbeing. Yet, health discussions often focus on personal choices like diet and exercise, without addressing the real root causes of poor health.
Without strong building blocks, communities struggle, and people’s health suffers. Many face barriers such as financial hardship, inadequate housing, and limited access to nutritious food. For example, struggling to afford heating or healthy meals can lead to chronic stress and serious health conditions, cutting lives short.
How can we make a difference?
When people understand how these factors affect health, they’re more likely to take action to improve them. By strengthening these building blocks, we can create healthier, happier communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.
The Health Foundation has developed toolkits to help explain the Building Blocks of Health and highlight the changes needed to improve wellbeing for all. These resources help raise awareness and drive action towards fairer, healthier communities.
Together, we can build a stronger, healthier Somerset, one building block at a time.
